Dorothy Smotherman Cates – Age 82, passed away at St. Thomas Hospital on January 10, 2012. Born Nashville, TN August 22, 1929, she had lived in Murfreesboro, TN for 50 years prior to moving to The Manor at Steeplechase in Cool Springs.

She was preceded in death by her parents, W. Earl and Willie McClaran Smotherman, by husband Cecil Cates, and by brother Travis E. Smotherman and his wife Billie. She is survived by brother James E. Smotherman and wife Carolyn, nieces Cathy and Amy Smotherman, Sara Smotherman Wood and husband Elliott, nephew Joe Smotherman and wife Jennifer, great niece Amelia McClaran Bogan, great nephews Nathan and Calvin Wood, Daniel Smotherman and wife Megan, and great great nephew James Robert Smotherman.

Dorothy spent her early life in Wartrace and attended school there all twelve years. She especially enjoyed playing basketball and was the team captain in her senior year. Dorothy attended MTSC for 2 years before being employed by AEDC, where she worked for 35 years before her retirement.

Dorothy shared her mother’s passion for the outdoors. She enjoyed the woods, wildflowers and edible plants, and relic hunting.  As an avid book collector she specialized in cook books.  She continued to receive newspapers from each community she had been associated with and kept the family up to date on all local events of interest.

The funeral was at Gowen-Smith Chapel in Shelbyville, TN on Saturday, January 14, 2012, with burial following at Hollywood Cemetery in Wartrace, Tennessee.
